Where is the Hintertux Glacier?

The Hintertuxer Glacier is located in Tyrol, in the Zillertal Valley to be precise. It is part of the Tux Alps and is located near the village of Hintertux. The glacier is accessible all year round and offers many leisure activities such as skiing and hiking.

Which villages are close to the Hintertuxer Glacier?

There are several villages close to the Hintertux Glacier. 
Tux consists of several villages such as Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Vorderlanersbach. Finkenberg is a little further away from the glacier. Finkenberg also offers easy access to the other ski resorts in the Zillertal.
A little further away from the glacier is the very famous and popular Mayrhofen. Mayrhofen offers a wide range of holiday homes, group accommodation and apartments. From here you can easily reach Hintertux and the surrounding ski areas by car or public transport.

How many kilometres of slopes are there on the Hintertuxer Gletscher?

In winter there are 62 kilometres of ski runs on the glacier. This is divided into 16 kilometres of blue runs, 34 kilometres of red runs and 12 kilometres of black runs. In summer there are around 20 kilometres of pistes.

How many and what kind of lifts are there?

There are several gondolas, chair lifts and tow lifts on the Hintertux glacier.  The Gletscherbus I and Sommerbergbahn gondolas take you to the top. In total there are 6 gondolas (also Gletscherbus 2 and 3, Fernerhaus and Gefrorene Wand). There is always room for 8 or 10 people in the gondolas. So you can get to the top quickly and comfortably. There are also 6 different chair lifts (including the Tuxerjoch) and 9 T-bar lifts. The chairlifts and tows take you to the middle and upper slopes. How do I get to the Hintertux Glacier?

You can get to the glacier from the village of Hintertux. Hintertux is at the end of the Ziller Valley.

What is the highest ski slope in Austria?

The Hintertuxer Glacier ski area is the highest ski slope and lift in Austria, and the only place you can ski all year round.

Is there a snow park?

Yes, there is a snowpark (Betterpark Hintertux) on the Hintertux glacier. From autumn to spring, the park offers excellent conditions and a variety of offers for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. The Betterpark is located at an altitude of around 3,200 metres.

Is the ski area at the Hintertuxer Glacier snow guaranteed?

Yes, the ski area on the Hintertuxer Glacier is very snow reliable. Due to the high altitude of up to 3,250 metres, snow conditions are good all year round. The Hintertux Glacier is the only ski area in Austria that is open all year round. In the summer there are usually 20 kilometres of slopes.

Can I cross-country ski on the glacier?

There are no cross-country trails on the glacier.  Around Hintertux there are 28 km of well groomed trails (some of which are skating style). In total, there are more than 100 km of cross-country trails in the Zillertal.

What does the ski area belong to?

The Hintertuxer Glacier ski area is located in the Zillertal. Within the Zillertal, the ski area is part of the larger Zillertal 3000, which connects ski areas such as Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and Hippach Schwendau. 

Are there ski schools in the area?

Of course there are ski schools here. The Skischule Tuxertal on the glacier offers lessons all year round!  For skis and other winter sports equipment, there are several ski rental shops in the area.

Which ski pass do I need for the Hintertuxer Glacier?

You can buy a ski pass that is only valid for the Hintertuxer Glacier ski area. You can also buy the Zillertal Superskipass.

Zillertal Super Ski Pass
The Zillertal Superskipass is valid in the 4 major ski areas (Hochzillertal - Hochfügen, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and Ski & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000) in the Zillertal. The Zillertal Superskipass gives you access to 180 lifts and more than 540 kilometres of slopes.

Is there a ski bus to the glacier?

There are all kinds of ski bus routes throughout the Zillertal from all the villages, including to the Hintertuxer Glacier. With a valid Zillertal Superskipass or Tirol Snow Card you can use all these ski buses for free, including the Green Line between Mayrhofen and Hintertux.
