Where is Fanningberg ?
Fanningberg Ski Resort is located in Lungau, in the southern part of Salzburgerland. The area is close to the famous villages of Mariapfarr and Mauterndorf. The city of Salzburg is approximately 100 kilometres away.
Fanningberg is not very well known. Nevertheless, Fanningberg is a good destination for winter sports, partly because of its sunny and snow-sure slopes.
Is Fanningberg easy to reach?
Fanningberg and its surrounding villages are easily accessible via the A10 Tauern motorway. Take the St. Michael im Lungau exit and continue via Mauterndorf to Mariapfarr, from where it is a further 4km to the ski resort.
What is the skiing area like?
Fanningberg Ski Resort is located in the region with the most hours of sunshine in Austria. It is a small and quiet area at an altitude of between 1500 and 2115 metres.
Fanningberg is located on a mountain and has several runs. There are five lifts. Once you get to the top, there are several descents on each lift. The descents are generally gentle and not very long. There are also a few hard black runs. All runs end at the valley station, which is nice because you don't lose each other so easily.
All in all, Fanningberg is an excellent ski area for families or groups of all levels.
What towns are close to Fanningberg?
There are a number of cosy villages close to the Fanningberg ski resort that are popular with winter sports enthusiasts:
Mariapfarr - This village (1119m) is about 8km from Fanningberg and is known for its quiet and family friendly environment. There are many holiday cottages and apartments in Mariapfarr. The historic church is well worth a visit.
Fanning - This small village lies at the foot of the Fanningberg ski area. Fanning is a great place to stay if you want to be close to the slopes. It is a quiet village, perfect for a nice summer holiday or for your winter sports holiday.
Weißpriach - You will find this village (1100m) about 7 kilometres from the Fanningberg Ski Area. Weißpriach is a picturesque, quiet village with beautiful natural surroundings. From the peaks of the Gupritscheck and the Karnereck you can enjoy the best views.
Mauterndorf - The charming village of Mauterndorf (1123m) is about 10km away and is a historic market town with a cosy village centre. Here you will find everything you need for your holiday. From Mauterndorf you can also access the Grosseck-Speiereck ski area by cable car.
Tamsweg - This slightly larger town (1024m) is about 14km from the ski resort. Tamsweg has the more regional facilities such as the hospital.
You can park your car at the Samson chairlift. With a valid ski pass you can take the ski bus to the ski area.
In summer you can cycle, mountain bike and hike. There are over 1,000 kilometres of cycling trails in the area.
Is the Fanningberg ski resort snow reliable?
Yes, due to its altitude of up to 2,150m, the Fanningberg ski area is snow guaranteed.
What else is there to do in Fanningberg?
Everything you need for a great winter holiday! There is a fun zone. You can go tobogganing on the floodlit toboggan run and snowshoe walking.
What does the ski resort belong to?
Fanningberg is part of the vast Lungau-Katschberg, an area that includes 3 beautiful ski resorts: Katschberg-Aineck, Grosseck-Speiereck and of course Fanningberg itself. Each of these resorts offers snow-assured slopes, mainly with easy to medium difficulty runs. This makes Lungau-Katschberg the perfect destination for both beginners and families with children.
Which ski resorts are nearby?
Looking for a few more kilometres of slopes nearby? The Grosseck-Speiereck and Katschberg-Aineck ski areas are close by. The ski resort of Obertauern is also not far away and well worth a visit.
Can I go cross-country skiing in Fanningberg?
Safe! With more than 200 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, the Lungau region offers extensive opportunities for cross-country skiing and hiking. Near the village of Weißpriach is a beautiful 12km track.
Near the Großeck-Speiereck ski area, near St. Michael, is the beautiful Murtalloipe. This track is no less than 22 kilometres long.
Are there toboggan runs?
Tobogganing is part of your winter holiday in Austria! Both Mauterndorf and St. Michael im Lungau have toboggan runs.
In Mauterndorf, the toboggan run is at the Speiereckhütte, which takes you up to the top of the Grosseck cable car in Mauterndorf. It's a bit of a hike from there.
In St. Michael there is a bus transfer to the 1.5km toboggan run. The bus leaves from the Petersbründl lift mountain station.
Can I go off-piste in Fanningberg?
Yes, you can go skiing off the pistes here as well.
What kind of ski pass do I need in Fanningberg?
There are several ski pass options for this resort. Ski pass prices depend on season, age and duration. Ski passes are available for different periods of time, from half-day passes to multi-day passes and season passes.
You can buy a ski pass for Fanningberg only here.
A second option is to buy the Ski Lungau Card, which gives you access to the Großeck-Speiereck and Katschberg-Aineck ski areas in addition to Fanningberg Großeck-Speiereck.
The third option is the Lungo ski pass. Valid in Obertauern, Grosseck-Speiereck, Fanningberg and Aineck-Katschberg. The Lungo ski pass gives you access to 59 lifts and 300 km of pistes.

Is there après-ski in Fanningberg?
Of course, après-ski is also available here. Otto's Schirmbar is at the bottom of the Fanningberg lift and there are several mountain huts on the slopes. And of course there are cafes and bars in the surrounding villages where you can après-ski. In Mauterndorf, for example, try the Fliegenpilz or the Schi Alm.
Are there ski schools and ski hire in Fanningberg?
There are two ski and snowboard schools in Fanningberg, of which the "Kinderskischule Funny" is especially aimed at children. These lessons are held in the Funny Kinderpark.
