Where is the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area located?

The Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area is located in East Tyrol, Austria. It includes the villages of Kals am Großglockner and Matrei in East Tyrol, on the south side of the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain. 

The ski resort is part of the SkiHit ski area, which includes several ski resorts in East Tyrol. This ski area offers access to more than 160 km of slopes spread over several mountains and valleys. Some of the other ski areas covered by SkiHit include Sillian Hochpustertal and Mölltal Glacier. The Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is the largest ski area in the region.

Is the Kals-Matrei ski area suitable for beginners?

The Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is suitable for beginner skiers. In the village of Kals, there are areas specially adapted for beginners at the Dorf and Trembler elevators. There are also practice opportunities at the mountain station Goldried in Matrei with a pancake and drag elevator. 

The area has about 46 kilometers of slopes, of which about 9 kilometers are specially equipped for beginners. These slopes are clear and easily accessible, with wide practice slopes and free practice elevators. A free conveyor belt is available at Gradonna Mountain Resort.

Is Kals-Matrei suitable for advanced skiers and off-piste skiing?

Yes, the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area is definitely suitable for advanced and off-piste skiers. The area offers challenging slopes and off-piste opportunities.

For advanced skiers:
The Cimaross and Blauspitz areas boast tough black runs and steep downhills. The valley descent to Matrei, with a length of 7 km and an altitude difference of 1,500 metres, is particularly demanding. For extra challenge, black runs and some mogul slopes are available.

Off-piste:
The ski area offers a number of attractive off-piste and Tiefschnee sections, especially around the Cimaross and the Blauspitz. These areas are ideal for skiers looking for technical challenges. There are also ski routes and steep runs, such as the descent at the Cimaross with an altitude difference of 450 metres.

Can I cross-country ski in Kals-Matrei?

Of course, cross-country skiers can enjoy an extensive network of trails in the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area. A total of 30 km of cross-country trails are available.

Is there a snowpark?

The Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area does not have a snowpark.

Is the Kals-Matrei ski resort snow sure?

The ski area Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is known for its excellent snow conditions. This is made possible in part by the use of more than 200 snow cannons installed on all slopes.

Due to the high altitude of most of the slopes (over 1,500 meters) and the fact that the valley run to Kals is usually passable from the first to the last day of the season, skiers can count on reliable snow conditions. 

Are there toboggan runs?

At the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei you can enjoy tobogganing. The 4 km long toboggan run offers a comfortable gondola ride from Kals/Großdorf to the middle station of the Gorneralm. This run is shared with skiers, so you can ski and sled at the same time.

Which ski pass do I need?

There is a ski pass that is only valid for all the lifts and slopes in the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski area,
